Chargeable Weight in Air Freight: How Volumetric Weight Affects Your Cost

Air freight is billed on chargeable weight, not simply what your cargo weighs on a scale. Many first-time shippers are surprised when a light but bulky carton is priced like a much heavier one. Here is how the calculation works and how to keep it in your favour.

What Chargeable Weight Means

Chargeable weight in air freight compared with sea freight for Pakistani shippers

Chargeable weight is the higher of two numbers: the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight. Airlines have limited space in the aircraft hold, so bulky cargo that takes up room must pay for that room.

The standard IATA formula is length x width x height in centimetres, divided by 6,000, giving kilograms. Many express couriers use a divisor of 5,000, which makes bulky parcels cost more. Always confirm which divisor your carrier applies.

Practical Example: Karachi to Dubai

You ship 8 cartons, each 60 x 50 x 40 cm, with a total actual weight of 120 kg.

  • Volume per carton: 120,000 cm3; for 8 cartons: 960,000 cm3
  • Volumetric weight: 960,000 / 6,000 = 160 kg
  • Chargeable weight: 160 kg, because it is higher than 120 kg

At an illustrative rate of USD 1.80 per kg, you pay USD 288, not the USD 216 that the scale weight suggests. Repacking into tighter cartons is the fastest way to close that USD 72 gap.

Common Mistakes

  • Quoting freight on actual weight and ignoring volumetric weight
  • Measuring cartons before adding pallets or crates
  • Rounding dimensions down instead of to the next centimetre
  • Mixing the 6,000 and 5,000 divisors between carriers

Expert Tips

  • Use right-sized cartons and remove empty space
  • Ship dense goods by air and send bulky, low-value goods by sea
  • Send exact dimensions with every quote request
  • Compare chargeable weight on the airline airway bill and your invoice

FAQ

Is chargeable weight the same as gross weight?

No. Gross weight is what the cargo weighs; chargeable weight is whichever is higher, gross or volumetric.

What is the volumetric weight formula for air freight?

Length x width x height in cm divided by 6,000 for standard air cargo. Couriers often use 5,000.

Does sea freight use chargeable weight?

LCL sea freight is charged per cubic metre or per tonne, whichever is greater, commonly 1 CBM to 1,000 kg.

Can I reduce my chargeable weight?

Yes. Compact packaging and removing air gaps lower volumetric weight directly.

Who calculates it, the airline or forwarder?

The airline sets the final figure at acceptance, and your forwarder should quote it in advance.
