Transit Time Calculator

Port-to-port transit is only part of the story. Build your timeline leg by leg — pickup, export clearance, the main carriage, import clearance and delivery — and see the realistic door-to-door arrival date. Every duration is yours to enter; we never assume a transit time on a lane we have not quoted.

Build your timeline

Start with a template, then adjust each leg to match your carrier's schedule and your own experience of the lane.

What a door-to-door timeline actually contains

The single most common planning mistake is treating the carrier's published port-to-port figure as the delivery date. On a typical ocean import into Pakistan, the vessel leg is often less than half the total elapsed time.

StageWhat happensCounted in
Cargo ready to pickupBooking confirmed, transport arranged, cargo collected from the supplierWorking days
Export haulageInland move from factory to port or airport, plus any queueing at the terminal gateWorking days
Export customs and cut-offDocumentation, export declaration, and waiting for the vessel or flight cut-offWorking days
Main carriageThe vessel or aircraft movement itself, including any transhipment callCalendar days
Discharge and destination handlingUnloading, terminal transfer, container destuffing for LCLCalendar days
Import customs clearanceDeclaration, assessment, duty payment, examination if selectedWorking days
DeliveryPort release, inland haulage, unloading at the consigneeWorking days

LCL adds three to seven days over FCL at each end because the container has to be stuffed at origin and destuffed at destination alongside other shippers' cargo, and neither happens until the consolidator has a full box.

Why schedules slip

Published transit times describe the intended service, not the observed one. The most frequent causes of delay, in roughly the order we see them:

  • Rolled cargo. The booking is confirmed but the container does not make the intended sailing because the vessel is overbooked. On tight capacity this can repeat.
  • Transhipment. Any routing that changes vessel adds a connection risk. A missed connection at a hub typically costs one full weekly rotation.
  • Customs examination. Selection for scanning or physical examination is usually a matter of days, but documentary discrepancies can extend it considerably.
  • Port congestion and weather. Berth waiting, monsoon closures and fog disruption at either end.
  • Documentation. A missing certificate of origin or an incorrect HS code stops the clearance regardless of where the cargo is.
  • Holiday periods. Chinese New Year, Eid, Golden Week and the Christmas period each compress capacity for weeks either side.

This is why the calculator includes a buffer field. Quote the buffered date to your customer and the unbuffered one to nobody.

Frequently asked questions

What is transit time?
The elapsed time between two defined points. Always establish which two — port-to-port and door-to-door can differ by two weeks or more on the same shipment.
Why does this tool not have preset lane times?
Because a lane time that is right in March is wrong in October. Transit times depend on the carrier, the service string, the transhipment port and the season. Use your carrier's current schedule, or ask us for the lane you are shipping.
Should customs clearance be counted in working days?
Yes. Customs authorities, banks and most inland hauliers work business days. Vessels and aircraft do not stop for weekends, so main carriage legs should be counted in calendar days.
How much buffer is sensible?
About a week on a stable direct ocean lane, two to three weeks where there is transhipment, peak season pressure, a new supplier, or a major holiday in the routing.
Can I work backwards from a required delivery date?
Yes — enter the legs, read the total days, and count back from your required date to find the cargo ready date you need to give your supplier.
